The literature review section is an integral part of dissertation writing and involves referencing peer-reviewed articles to support or disclaim current academic work. The source and credibility of referenced materials are important to the acceptability of published academic articles and the validation of research results and conclusions. With the proliferation of the internet in the twenty-first century, more reliance has been placed by academicians on electronic sources of information for research work (Kibirige & DePalo, 2017). In searching the internet for credible content, academic researchers desire “accessibility, timeliness, readability, relevance and authority” (Kibirige & DePalo, 2017, p11). While accessibility, timeliness, and readability can be assured by the internet, contents that meet the relevance and authority elements require diligence to identify.
Journals and other publications by the American Psychological Association, APA, are sources that meet the relevance and authority criteria. They provide a rich source of peer-reviewed content that could be accessed and referenced by researchers. The APA website ( provides access to databases, digital learning resources, magazines, reports, books, and peer-reviewed journals “spanning the breadth and depth of psychology” (APA, 2022). The journals can be searched by title or by subject.
In searching the APA website for articles that closely match my proposed dissertation area, I used the “Browse Journals” tab to access the APA and affiliated journals page and then browsed the journals by subject, focusing on the subjects relating to my dissertation area. I was astonished by the large number of articles that I could use for my literature review and other sections of my work. One great feature of the APA website is that articles can be sourced by the most downloaded and most cited, making it easy to identify articles that have wider acceptability.
This is my first time utilizing this resource and I am happy to explore its richness.
